The Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 363,419 in 1970 to 569,633 in 2010. That was an increase of 56.7 percent.
The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 5,626 in 1970 to 37,478 in 2010. That was an increase of 566.2 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.5 percent to 6.6 percent.
The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 48.7 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the principal factor in rising population in all periods.
The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the primary factor in population increase.
